I came to know about this ritual from some acquaintance who is an advocate against female genital mutilation. This ritual t is mainly prevalent in rural than urban areas. The reason behind this  the families perception that they need to guard the virginity and reputation of daughters until marriage. Although this ritual is declining and the government is trying to have stricter punishments to stop it, it appears that it is still done in some rural area where the society is under the impact of poverty and literacy. There is new laws that consider this ritual as criminal offense and the parents as well as doctor would be subject to prison sentences. Asking around , UNICEF and other major organizations is doing great programs to try to eliminate this practice and spread awareness in those under served communities. It is really sad that the parents would impose not only physical health issues to their children but the mental trauma associated with this incident would take years to be clear its impact
